2015: A Year of Running

12/30/2015

I have always liked to run, even in my teenage years when I was playing football and numerous other sports, running was never a punishment for me. However 2015 was the year I actually feel I fully embraced my interest and passion to run. It all started in 2014, through my decision to accept a charity place in the 2015 London Marathon, and then there was no stopping me!

March 2015
Lincoln 10k - 49mins 50secs
My third year of running the Lincoln 10k and my favourite. Although not my best timewise - mid marathon training I was happy just to get sub 50mins - the best part was being able to share race day for the first time with my two friends. I could not believe how happy and relaxed I felt stood on the start line in their company compared to the nerves and anxiety which eclipsed the two previous years. I also didn't really care too much for my own time, and was just so content with being able to celebrate their own achievements.

April 2015
Brighton 10k - 49mins 31secs
A completely unexpected trip down to Brighton with my friend after winning a competition in which everything from hotel to kit and travel was paid for. Simply too good to miss! With the London Marathon so close I was cautious, but pleased to make a marginal improvement on my Lincoln 10k time. Sat on the beach afterwards watching the Brighton Marathon take place also really made me begin to feel excited for London.

London Marathon - 4hrs 9mins 31secs
Achieving my lifetime ambition of running the London Marathon was simply amazing - there is no other way to put it. I had the best day of my life, and will never forget the emotion I felt spotting my friends and family in the crowds. Running the marathon marked a very personal achievement for me, and if I am honest was something a few years ago I probably would have never thought I could actually do. But I did it.

May 2015
Colour Dash 5k, Lincoln
Some light relief after the London Marathon and a fun day out with friends from my local gym. Having taken part in the high profile 'Color Run' in Brighton in 2014 I wasn't expecting too much from a local event - but I was happily proven wrong! Another great Lincoln running event.

June 2015
Liverpool Rock'n'Roll 1/2 Marathon - 1hr 49mins 1sec
This was my first official half marathon, and what a good race to chose for it! The Rock'n'Roll event was a wonderful experience; the live bands on course, the 'blingiest' medal, the finishing concert, the huge array of international runners, and the free beer! I was aiming for sub 1hr 50mins and got the time; although the best part was being able to run the entire way with my friend and cross the line together. Getting slightly drunk afterwards and being sat in the famous Cavern Club in full running gear was also a highlight...

July 2015
X-Runner Water Wipeout 10k, Nottingham
I didn't think it was possible to have so much fun whilst running - or gain so many bruises - before taking on the X Runner obstacle race with my friends, but it definitely is! I laughed so much I think I swallowed most of the murky water we were exposed to. The 10k distance was just enough of a challenge and the obstacles tough, but not impossible; unless you have rubbish flexibility like me that is, then mounting high walls is definitely a painful challenge!

August 2015
Bassingham Bash 5m, Lincoln - 37mins 30secs
Another new distance to race, and on a hot summer Saturday afternoon my friend and I ventured to the small village of Bassingham, where the promise of cake at the finish line was very much in our minds! I felt good going into the race; I had been rebuilding my speed following the marathon and knew I could do well. Going out hard and fast I built up enough time to make up for a slowing finish, and ended up recorded a result I was really happy with.

September 2015
Great North Run 1/2 Marathon - 1hr 49mins 36secs
This run was tough. Two words - the crowds and the hills. The challenge was made more bearable by being able run the whole way with my sister, the first time we had ever ran a race together. I was a little disappointed not to improve on my Liverpool Half Marathon time, but had to be realistic in the conditions. Instead I focused on the fact I have been lucky to experience another of the UK's biggest running events.

Finsbury Park 10k - 48mins 54secs
My birthday run! Having a Sunday birthday meant I had to find a race to do, and so my friend and ventured down to London for this 'women only' event. We came 11th and 12th respectively which I was chuffed with, as well as recording a much improved 10k time for the year on a surprisingly hilly course. Perhaps it was the lure of my favourite malteaser birthday cakes my friend had baked that spurred me on....!

October 2015
Oxford Half Marathon - 1hr 47mins 14secs
Another unplanned race after winning another competition! Going into this race I knew I wanted to beat my half marathon PB and was so happy to be able to achieve this. I ran strongly and at one point could have been close to the 1hr 45min mark, until my legs lost it in the last sections. Never the less, an achievement I was proud of. It was also my last race with my friend before she emigrated to Australia, so had special meaning attached to it.

December 2015
Santa Fun Run, Lincoln
Festive fun before Christmas. It was a fun run, but my friend and I raced it and ended up coming 4th and 5th female. Well technically, we were first and second as the other women in front of us were not in full Santa gear....(it was a fun run Alice!)

Park Run 2015
2015 was also my first entry into the world of Park Run and I soon realised why the event is so loved. A short Saturday morning spin around a local park has given me so many memories with my friends, but has also been a great little training tool, and a chance to chase down a PB. I have visited my home Lincoln Park Run on a number of times, but also was 'tourist' at Old Deer Park Run in London, where my friend and I ran the course in fleece Alien onesies whilst being slightly hungover (not a PB week!)
So that's 2015 in a nutshell - as I am sure you can appreciate its been quite a year, and this is just the running side of my life! Thank you so much to everyone who has been a part of all the above, whether that's cheering me on, encouraging me, running with me, listening to me talk about running, picking me up when things have not been so good - or all of these things; I literally could not have done it without you!

Manchester Marathon Training: Week 1

12/27/2015

Week one of the marathon training plan. For this starting week mileage has been fairly low and aspects such as intervals are yet to feature. This relatively easier week has actually been timed quite well with it being Christmas week, when eating and drinking is rather excessive and my daily routine has been virtually thrown out the window!

MONDAY: Mondays are 'no running' days in my plan, following a Sunday long run. So I wanted to start as I mean to go on, and although I was not feeling in need of a running break, I managed to resist the running urge. I could not quite bring myself to do nothing, so opted for 40mins of cross training, and a good session of stretching and foam roller work before my Body Pump class.

TUESDAY: an 8k rain soaked run. The rain was heavy to begin with, and then became virtually torrential; at one point I could not see the path in front of me for the driving rain. My shoes were squelching with every step and I had to stop and wring my running top out at traffic lights. I tried to keep my pace steady as advised by my plan, but I was unsurprisingly not in the mood for lingering long outside, so went a bit too quick!

WEDNESDAY: I started the day with a festive 7am Body Pump class. Wearing my Santa hat meant it was a hot class, but fun nevertheless. In the evening I headed out for my run, 8k in more mild weather conditions. My legs felt a bit tired, not really sure why; so it was less of a challenge to keep the pace a bit slower than normal. Getting home I realised I was still running too fast than advised by my plan - this is probably the hardest adjustment I find at the start of marathon training, slowing down, and also accepting its ok to go a bit slower!

THURSDAY: Rest Day - Christmas Eve meant after a morning at work, it was time to travel back to my parents in Stowmarket ready for Christmas!
Picture
FRIDAY: fitting in a Christmas Day run meant heading out at 7.30am for a 5k loop with my sister (see image). I am not used to running this early, and tend to dislike morning runs, so I did feel a bit of a zombie and also was hungry having not eaten before going out. It was nice to get a run in though and kickstart the body ready for a day of Christmas treats!

SATURDAY: another 5k on the plan meant an unofficial Stowmarket Park Run at 9am (judging by the the amount of runners out at this time they need to seriously consider starting one!). Being slightly later in the morning I felt more alert than yesterday, and definitely was not feeling hungry after Christmas Day's intake! I soon realised I was running well ahead of pace, so made myself slow down for the last sections, averaging 5.05min/km by the end. I felt a little sluggish on the run, but not too bad considering it was Boxing Day.

SUNDAY: 13k around Stowmarket - my childhood home town. Its not the biggest town there is, so finding a running route was a bit of a challenge! My sister and I made something work though, and I enjoyed running with her despite the damp weather conditions and having to try and keep my pace in check. We also stopped off towards the end of the run at Stowmarkets's outdoor fitness trail, attempting monkeys bars in the rain and splashing through mud and puddles leap frogging wooden poles - it was like X-Runner all over again! So that's week one under my belt, its felt a bit surreal being Christmas week and being away from Lincoln for the most part, but the plan is definitely underway.

Top 5 Marathon Training Lessons

12/23/2015

This week marks the start of training for marathon number two - Manchester Marathon. I thought it would therefore be a good time to consolidate and remind myself of the five key lessons I took on from my very first experience of training for the London Marathon this year. At London I ran 4:09:32, and am now aiming for a sub 4hr time (ideally closer to 3hrs 45mins!!)

1) Rest Days
Before training for the London Marathon I exercised every day of the week. It was habit, and despite a background in studying sport/sport science I failed to recognise that my body actually needed time to rest in order to adapt to and recover from its training demands. I now have one rest day a week; I look forward to the mental break from having to push myself, and am also able to feel in my body when a break from exercise is needed. I thus fully intend to ensure rest days continue throughout marathon training.

2) Running Pace
For my first attempt at marathon training I was focused on distance - could I actually run for 26.2 miles? In my plan I soon disregarded the recommendations of what pace to run at, or when to include intervals etc., instead focusing on watching my weekly mileage tally up. It worked - I ran non stop for the whole marathon distance, at a very consistent pace, and in a time I am hugely proud of. But I recognise now that training like this did make me very one paced. I lost all my speed during marathon training - a clear impact of doing no real speed work - and any attempt at a shorter distance, such as Park Run, left me feeling sluggish. So this time the brain aching, heart pounding, leg draining intervals and tempo running WILL be included.

3) Foam Roller and Sports Massage
Both of these were factors I had not fully utilised prior to marathon training. I had a foam roller - a start I guess! - but had used it sparingly when I developed IT band pain a few years ago, and it had been sat dormant in the corner of my room since. Foam roller work definitely helped maintain my legs during training and also combatted any slight niggle that tried to develop; so I plan to use my roller daily to keep them in check. It was only when my calves became so tight during marathon training that I actually sought help from a Sports Massage Therapist - and am now converted. I have monthly massages to maintain my muscles and can feel when one is needed. Am I too reliant on them? Maybe, but if it helps then I am not about to stop!
Picture
4) Exercise Classes
My weekly exercise routine includes attending Body Pump and Body Attack exercise classes. During training for the London Marathon I kept attending Body Pump twice a week, and intend to do this again for my new plan. I find the strength work is of benefit to my endurance and also helps with injury prevention - plus I love the class too much to sacrifice! Body Attack classes are something I will admit I am struggling to know what to do with. The class is very high intensity and can leave you feeling exhausted, but it does include a lot of plyometric moves and cardiovascular work which is of benefit to running. During London Marathon training the class was not on for a large percentage of my plan due to instructor unavailability, but now it is back. Fitting this class into my plan will be a struggle, and potentially a run may have to be sacrificed for it. I need to weigh up the pros and cons, and whether I want to miss the social side of the class, which is something I really enjoy.

5) Blog
I started blogging at the beginning of my London Marathon training journey to help raise the profile of the charity I was running for, keep people up to date on my training progress, and admittedly to try help attract any potential sponsorship. I have kept the blog going for over a year now and find it a very useful tool for reflecting on my running/training and also for recording special moments and memories that running gives me. Writing and sharing my posts does play a part in my motivation levels, and I also hope that other people may be able to learn or seek comfort in the same feelings/process I am going through. So 'Alice's Adventures in Running Land' will continue towards the Manchester Marathon - and beyond!

Non Training Week 9

12/20/2015

My final week of 'no training' before the Manchester Marathon plan begins - mentally and physically I feel ready to go - so I guess these last nine weeks have served their purpose!

MONDAY: I started the week with an 8.5k run; my Garmin watch just would not find 'location' before I set off, so I ran without it. I felt like I was running well, and my feelings were reinforced when a pedestrian shouted out to me across the road, complimenting me on my running pace. Body Pump class afterwards.

TUESDAY: Rest Day

WEDNESDAY: my last stint at double Body Pump classes before marathon training. I have enjoyed the challenge of a morning and an evening class over the past few weeks, and have noticed that I have been gradually adapting to the workload, compared to the first few weeks when I was drained by the end of the evening class.

THURSDAY: a 9k run on a very unseasonably warm December evening - I wish I had been wearing just a running vest! My watch let me down again, running out of charge half way round - I need to get more routined with charging it when I get back into training that's for sure!

FRIDAY: Rest Day - unplanned after my work Christmas party carried on from lunch at 12 until 1am Saturday morning...!

SATURDAY: my friend and I ventured to a festive Park Run in Lincoln today for the last time in 2016 (see image). I had hoped to get my PB today, but after 13 hours of drinking and five hours sleep I knew this was not going to be possible! I think the fact I got up for 9am could be considered an achievement in itself! Park Run was in fact a massive struggle! I wanted to stop at one point as felt a bit queasy and my legs sluggish, but I dug in and carried on. It was again a strangely warm day, but I kept my Santa hat on to almost inflict more pain on myself! My time; no where near my best at 24mins 10sec, but it was never really going to be good! My friend meanwhile got her PB for the year, so it was a trip worth making at least!

I would also like to share the most amazing
Christmas gift that my friend gave to me after Park Run (see image) - a homemade medal hanger for my new house which I am moving into very
shortly- isn't it just perfect!! I literally cannot wait to put it up!

SUNDAY: ten steady miles along the riverbank near my house. I had not been along the path for many months since the darker days had drawn in, and I loved seeing how it had changed with the seasons. I didn't push the pace as still felt a little tired from Friday's antics, and I also wanted to make sure my legs were not strained too much ready for tomorrow when (finally!) marathon training begins.

Santa Run 2015

12/16/2015

It just would not be Christmas without a festive sprint dressed in a Santa suit would it!? This year was my second visit to Lincoln Santa Run, a fun run designed to spread festive cheer to all entrants. Last year my friend and I ran with some of the other members from our gym, but this year we struck out alone. The 3.5k 'race' is intended to be a fun run, however with the new introduction of a 'Fast Santas' starting area (see image) - designed for those who wanted to race the course - it was apparent we would not be sauntering around!

As if we needed anymore encouragement to race, we ended up being right at the front of the start line, with a red swarm or 2500 Santas lining up behind us. I even had my Garmin watch on under my red cloak (although by the time we actually came to start the race it has lost location and I gave up with it!) As the air horn was sounded we charged off, leading the way with a number of other more sprightly Santas and also a few Santas who were being helped - possibly dragged - along by their reindeer wannabe canines.

You forget how hot a Santa suit makes you, and as we powered around the course the fact my cloak was billowing open actually was a bit of a relief. The course was two loops, and as we finished our first lap we hit the back of the 'walking Santas' meaning my friend and I had to weave carefully through an array of buggys, scooters, dogs and tiny children. It was a little bit challenging at times, but the 'race' is for everyone so we must respect and also expect that.

As we hit the finishing straight the announcer on the tannoy stated we were battling for 3rd, 4th and 5th female places along with another young girl. In the masses of Santas we had been fighting through I literally had no idea we were doing so well! It was a nice surprise, and with our Santa suits now well and truly in a state of disarray (well captured by the local press - see image), we fought through the final metres. The young girl pipped us both to 3rd, but I was happy with an unexpected 5th place; my friend 4th. Next year the challenge will now undoubtedly be to beat this.. what have we started!

After the run we enjoyed a celebratory drink to mark the end of our running year, and watched some of the remaining Santas complete the course. I will hold my hands up and say I am not the most Christmassy person there is, but Santa Run is quickly becoming something I really look forward to in the festive build up.

Non Training Week 8

12/13/2015

Eight weeks without a training plan...needless to say I am now itching to get back into one! It is probably good timing that there is now just one week until the Manchester Marathon plan begins. With this in mind, this week I have taken the pressure off myself a little in preparation for what is about to come.

MONDAY: my hamstring was hurting me today, it was uncomfortable at work and causing shooting pain down my leg. I was worried, and with a sports massage booked for Thursday I took the decision to rest from running until the appointment in case I caused any unnecessary damage. My usual process of self diagnosising my niggle (e.g. searching aimlessly on Google for some kind of answer) had scared me a little and I wanted to be cautious. This meant cross training intervals and then Body Pump to start the week.

TUESDAY: Body Attack

WEDNESDAY: my self imposed running ban meant a double Body Pump session (the 7am and 6.30pm class) was always going to be on the cards. I fitted in some gentle cross training before the evening session too, in order to try and warm my hamstring a little.

THURSDAY: Rest Day and massage day. My Google led self diagnosis of possible High Hamstring Tendinopathy was thankfully wrong (I really need to stop doing it!) My hamstring was in a bad way though, somehow the three muscles forming the hamstring had become bundled together in a mass, which was causing tightness and pain along my leg.
Picture
As soon as I stood up from the massage bed I could feel the difference in my leg and I realised just how much discomfort I had actually been in!

FRIDAY: my first run of the week and despite feeling very tired in myself I managed my fastest 10k for a long time. It was not a hugely impressive time, but an improvement on recent weeks.

SATURDAY: after a morning outside coaching in the cold and rain, and with no heating or hot water in my house thanks to a broken boiler, I really could not face the prospect of getting cold and wet again on a miserable winter's day. So I headed to the gym and blasted out a 5k interval run on the treadmill. I really pushed myself and was knackered by the end, which felt strangely good. Finished with some speed intervals on the bike.

SUNDAY: Lincoln Santa Run - a festive sprint around my home city with my friend (see image), and a enjoyable way to end both of our years' of running. Is it bad I also feel a little proud we finished 4th and 5th female in a fun run!? Full blog to follow.

Forgotten Feet

12/9/2015

A runners feet - arguably the most important part of our body, yet one which I, and am sure many others out there, badly neglect. A few months ago a company called Flexitol (www.flexitol.co.uk) emailed offering me the opportunity to test out and review some of their foot products... and I have only just got round to trying them - which truly emphasises how bad I am at looking after my feet!

I have never really been a big fan a foot treatments, in the past I have found them oily and restricting. Once the cream is on your feet you cannot walk anywhere or do anything unless you want to leave a trail of grease on everything you touch. My feet were in need of some TLC though, and on the rare occasion I am not wearing trainers or sensible work shoes, I was starting to feel ashamed of the state they were in!

So, I have been using Flexitol Heel Balm and Flexitol Heel Magic for the past week and am very impressed. Unlike other creams I have used it is not greasy at all, and seems to absorb almost instantly on the skin. Although both are marketed as 'heel' products, I have been applying them to all areas of my feet to good effect. I particularly like the Heel Magic product with its wind up stick mechanism, which literally means there is no need to get any unwanted cream on your hands! Both products claim that you will see visible results in three days, and whilst initially I was skeptical of this statement, I now must agree. Results were very quick to occur and this made me keep using the cream rather than lapsing back to my old, uncaring ways. Overall, since using the Flexitol treatments my skin is softer and smoother - the exact results wanted.

I would definitely recommend giving Flexitol products a try - particularly if you have neglected your feet like me. Why not give your feet a little festive treat!

(Big thank you to Flexitol for letting my try and review your products)

Non Training Week 7

12/6/2015

MONDAY: I often see quotes and motivational images circulating on social media about 'never missing a Monday' etc., and although I did exercise, my usual routine was thrown, and this seemed to make me feel a bit lost for the entire week! My usual Body Pump class was cancelled, and then after work it was absolutely chucking it down with rain. I don't mind getting wet when running but this was another level! I actually contemplated a rest day, but the urge to do something got too much, so I headed to the gym. It was quite comical at the gym as half the usual Body Pump regulars were in there doing the same as me, wandering around not really sure what to do and looking a bit lost! I opted for 20mins of intervals on the bike and then upper body weights.

TUESDAY: Body Attack class and Fab Abs class.

WEDNESDAY: double Body Pump day - I really looked forward to doing this after missing Mondays's class, the 7am and the 6.30pm workouts actually weirdly felt like there were different days and didn't make me feel as tired as normal. I even squeezed in a 25min cross training session before the evening class.

THURSDAY: my first run of the week! I enjoyed getting out, despite having to battle for pavement space with the Christmas Market goes who had descended on Lincoln. A pleasant 9.5k loop in surprisingly warm December conditions.

FRIDAY: I forced myself to run today as I felt a bit guilty for my lack of running so far. Normally this would have been a rest day, but with Monday knocking me out of routine I felt like I needed some extra miles in my legs. I chose my familiar 8.5k loop, and put not pressure on myself as a form of self compromise for actually getting out the door!
Picture
SATURDAY: today was very, very windy as Lincoln felt the influence of Storm Desmond hitting the country. It did not really take a genius to work out that running was going to be tough! I somehow managed to accumulate ten miles, running roughly two miles to and from my friends house, then an eight mile route with my friend. At points the gusts were strong enough to knock our feet from underneath us, nearly making us trip ourselves up. I struggled in the headwind, I find the wind really throws my rhythm and often leaves me feeling like I have actually been physically winded. Conditions like this are all good training though, and although upon finishing I think I actually referred to the feeling as 'like being punched!', at the same time it did feel amazing to have actually accomplished the challenge.

SUNDAY: having not had a rest day this week, and having completed my long run yesterday I was at a bit of a loss of what to do...rest? run? cross train? It felt odd doing nothing on a Sunday! Rather than lacing up my trainers in the morning my view instead looked like this...(see image). Sat on my bed, compression socks on, finalising my soon-to-start marathon training plan, and reflecting on this week's 'training'. After four hours of Christmas shopping/walking my hamstring was however bothering me - after seven weeks of being careful and with two weeks until marathon training starts, its fabulous timing! - so I sensibly opted to rest. I have a sports message booked for next week so I am just praying its something which can be manipulated out...!

Looking Ahead: 2016

12/2/2015

2015 initially was the year of the marathon - after securing a dream place in the London Marathon it was my main focus, plus with it being my first marathon experience it consumed a lot of my time and thoughts (plus the fundraising!) However, in the end 2015 has actually turned out to be a year filled with many running achievements and memories... but I will review 2015 in full towards the very end of the year - you never know something else incredible may just happen!

Looking ahead to 2016, what will the focus be? I have already signed up for quite a few events, so it appears running will very much be on the agenda - not that I would actually want it any other way! So far 2016 is shaping up as follows:

January
Winter Run 10k, Liverpool - a post Christmas trip to visit my sister in Liverpool and run a 10k with some Polar Bears (dressed as The Beatles maybe!?) This will be a mid marathon training 10k, so the aim will be to record a good time and not get injured!

April
Manchester Marathon - marathon number two. After a 4.09.32 finish in London the goal is sub 4 hrs. I am actually lying, the dream goal is really sub 3.45, and whilst I will be training hard with this in mind, I almost feel a little crazy admitting this to people as I do have a fair bit of time to knock off! Never the less, marathon number two is happening.

Lincoln 10k - my hometown race and one I just cannot miss. This year it falls a week after the Manchester Marathon, so there is no aim really as it will be highly dependent on what state I am in! I just want to enjoy and be a part of the day when running takes over my city.

May
Liverpool Rock n Roll Half Marathon - back to Liverpool, this time for a half marathon with my sister. I ran this event in 2015 and loved it, so I am pleased to be heading back, and with an existing course time to beat I will be aiming to run hard.

July
Women's Running 10k, Nottingham - in 2016 I want to attempt to beat my 10k PB, and for that I need a 10k that falls at a time when I am neither marathon training or recovering from a marathon! Could this be it!?

So that's 2016 as it stands, not too bad considering we have not actually got there yet!  It makes me excited seeing it planned out, I am already looking forward to both the physical challenges of training and race days, as well as the memories and moments that will be created and shared - a feeling I am sure every runner can relate to.
