2017: A Year Of Running

12/27/2017

Writing this review has made me fully realise what a year of running it has been for me during 2017. I have set PBs at 5k, 5mile, 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon distance; beating most of these records twice within the year and shaving off considerable amounts of time in the process. I have improved as a runner, met my goals, placed well in some races, and have a lot more medals hanging from my medal board. However I do not just run for times, like many, I love the memories, friendship, experiences, motivation and happiness running and racing brings me. Whilst running has gone almost perfectly, my life outside running has not always been so smooth, and I therefore would not have been able to achieve what I have or enjoyed what I have done quite as much without the unwavering support given to me by friends and family and in particular the companionship of my long suffering running buddy; who as you will see, features heavily within my 2017 running adventures…

February
Harewood House Half Marathon - 1:56:12
A beautifully tough race. This event was a constant hilly battle, sharp inclines mixed in with long steady climbs, all set on varying terrains ranging from thick grassland to bumpy fields and mud thick mounds. Even the downhill sections were hard to run on with slippery mud meaning it was less freewheeling and more a careful, controlled navigation of the safest route. Amidst all of this was the most beautiful scenery though, and a sense of almost peace running through the vast expanse of nature - I loved this start to the year. The race was extra special as it was also the first time my friend and I had been able to take part in something together for over six months, and giving her a weary squeeze at the finish funnel, it felt good to have her back.

April
Lincoln 10K - 44:18
My hometown race and the event where my running journey started some four years ago. I love ‘Lincoln 10k day’; both the run and post run celebrations, which have now become a bit of tradition. This year I felt I had potential to challenge my PB; I knew I was running well, and I chose a risky strategy of treating the race like a parkrun and just seeing how long I could hold on for. I ran hard, my knowledge of the local roads helping me break the course down into miles, and with gritted teeth and a visible grimace, stopped the clock at 44:18; a new PB and nearly three and half minutes quicker than my previous record. Whilst optimistic, I had not expected that much improvement. I met my friend at the finish line; she was not far behind me setting her own PB, and we congratulated each other in a state of slight disbelief ready for well earned post run refreshments.

Boston Athletic Association (BAA) 5K
Supporting my friend complete the prestigious Boston Marathon was an almost unreal experience. I was so proud of her for qualifying for the race, and the chance to be there to watch her inspiring run was something I simply could not miss. The BAA 5k took place a couple of days before the marathon and I wanted to take the opportunity to experience a little bit of the Boston magic myself. I was not racing; I just wanted to savour an enjoyable run with friends. The route was perfect, a taster of Boston’s streets, which were well lined and very noisy, and also featured the last section of the marathon, including crossing the infamous finish line. If the atmosphere of the event is anything to go by then there is no wonder the Boston Marathon is so special. If I wasn’t already hungry to chase down my own Boston Qualifying (BQ) time for the marathon, I definitely was now. Hopefully I will get my chance to go back one day…

London Marathon - 3:51:03
Marathon number four and my fourth attempt at going under four hours. Having completed London as my first marathon in 2015, I knew it would be a special experience, but had some doubts as to whether it could be just as good second time round. Simply put, it was. I was so emotional, even walking to the start I had tears in my eyes. My training had gone very well and standing on the start line I knew I was probably in the best shape of my life; I had to focus. Running over Tower Bridge brought back the tears; spotting my friend and the sheer amount of people screaming my name was overwhelming. From mile sixteen my quads became very sore, but the London crowds helped me cope – in fact they were immense throughout. I hit 20 miles still on track for a sub 4 finish, but I didn’t let myself become complacent. Along the Embankment I heard the familiar sound of my parents calling my name, this spurred me on more. Turning by Big Ben, it was then it suddenly all seemed real, and on Birdcage Walk my friend was there supporting again. I attempted to shout ‘I’m going to do it!’, and I will never forget the expression on her face looking back which told me she knew I was too. The final turn onto The Mall made me cry (again!), and my pure emotion was demonstrated as I pumped my fists and celebrated in a style very out of my usual character – a moment I will never forget. Overjoyed, I crossed the line in 3:51:03. As I was handed my medal I cried again – pure happy tears.

May
Liverpool Rock'n'Roll Half Marathon - 1:43:35
Having already notched new PBs at 5k, 10k, and marathon distance during 2017, the temptation to try and add half marathon distance to this list was certainly on my mind. I had not specifically trained for a PB; but I was hopeful my residual marathon fitness would serve me well. This was my third consecutive year running this event, so I knew the course and knew I would love the variation and live music it offers. This year the final four miles along Liverpool's docks featured a lovely head wind, and I knew these miles would make or break my PB. I went into marathon mode, head down and just focused on ticking off each mile. It worked and I crossed the line in 1:43:35; a near 2 minute PB. Never at the start of the year did I think that by the end of May I would have set a new PB at each distance; but I had.

June
Round Sheffield Run - 1:46:31
A simply unique race which I fell in love with in 2016. The event comprises of 11 timed stages of running, totally 20km, with 4.5km worth of recovery breaks in between stages, and is set along beautiful trails and parkland. I love how each stage offers a different challenge ranging from dirt tracks, mountainous hills, rocky paths, dense woodlands, gradual burning climbs, cityscape descents, and all out sprints; it has everything, and often feels like you are in a different country - definitely not in Sheffield! The race also allows you to compete as a pair, and being able to run with a friend makes it extra special. Running with my friend, we conquered the tough climbs and each of the stage tests strongly; our slight weakness actually being the downhill sections, which we approached with some caution for fear of twisting an ankle at the start of our Berlin Marathon training! Our official time was 1:46:31; 11 minutes shaved off from 2016 and a time which saw us place 17th Female Pair overall.

July
Clumber Park Half Marathon - 1:47:31
I opted for this race as a way of incorporating my marathon training and a visit from my sister. The event was a matching distance to my training plan and was also set in an interesting location – a perfect fit. The course had a lot of long gradual climbs and very changeable running surfaces; I knew to expect the event to be trail based, but perhaps I was not fully prepared for quite the challenge it would present. I loved running with my sister though, it felt like we were out exploring together, and even though I had ran in Clumber Park a few times before, I did not recognise hardly any of the paths we were taking. We crossed the finish line together, and although aiming to take things easy, placed 5th and 6th overall. An enjoyable test and one I am pleased I had my sister to rise to the challenge with.

August
Newark Half Marathon - 1:44:45
Another race that fell perfectly within my marathon training plan. Race day proved to be very warm; conditions which helped me treat the event with more of a training focus, as did running with my friend, who is far more disciplined than myself! We aimed for a sub 1:45 time, and the long straight nature of the course was helpful in keeping consistent pacing. The weather was the biggest challenge; miles 9-10 in particular turning simply into a quest to make it to a water station! The grassy finish to the race was also slightly cruel, causing a final fight to the finish. Turning into the finishing straight and running side by side with my friend had a powerful feel; it seemed like we were running as one person almost. We crossed the line in 1:44:45 – mission accomplished. A sweaty embrace showed our happiness; and I hoped the next time we would achieve this feeling would be in Berlin…

September
Bassingham Bash 5m - 34:14
A growing staple in my race calendar. Set in the charming village of Bassingham it offers a rare opportunity to race a five mile distance, and earn a slice of cake at the end! I never know how to approach 5 miles, so stuck with an aim of trying to run as hard as possible for as long as possible. I flew off at the start, setting starting splits which shocked me, but tried to remain confident in my ability and not collapse. My legs did me proud, and even as a hit the final few hundred yards set on grass playing field, they did not falter, stopping the clock at 34:14; a new PB and over three minutes quicker than my previous time. Cake felt even more deserved now!

Berlin Marathon - 3:48:13
A highly meaningful and memorable race. In 2016 I had completed the event alone having originally planned to run with my friend; injury meant she was unable to take part, and it never felt quite the same. We were thus determined to come back and run it together. I had just one goal for the race this year, and that was to pass through the Brandenburg Gate finish alongside my friend. Race day was cool, and I also felt quite calm in the knowledge my friend was stood beside me on the start line. In contrast the race itself was busy, much busier than I recalled from 2016. We weaved through the field, navigated the madness of water stations, and although adding unwanted distance, we somehow remained together. Up until mile 20 things felt good, but from mile 21 the sheer pain of a marathon hit us both. Despite the pain, we managed to keep pace. I thank my friend for this; I was starting to struggle but the determination of keeping with her and finishing together stopped me from slowing. We passed through Brandenburg Gate side by side, and masked our pain with smiles as we hand in hand ran to the finish line. The clock stopped at 3:48:13, another new PB for me, but what I really cared about was we had started and finished together. It felt so special to share that exact finishing moment; the emotional hug we collapsed into at the end said a thousand words. I will forever remember that exhausted but triumphant embrace, and I will never forget the bond that is formed through sharing those 26.2 miles together.

October
Lincoln Half Marathon - 1:42:07
A race one week post Berlin Marathon – madness. Running a PB one week post marathon – painful. Unable to resist a race in my hometown, this just seemed like a good idea. From the off I went for it; I felt there was no point holding back and being cautious. From quite early on the race proved to be almost as mentally testing as a marathon though; my legs were understandably not quite right, and a hilly section in the middle of the course felt like it wiped my body out. I was struggling toward the end, but when doing some running maths and realising what may be possible, I dug deep. I finished in 1:42:07, a new PB, and a time which secured 15th female spot and third place in my age category. I really had to fight hard to get this PB, and I was proud of what I achieved mentally and physically. A half marathon and a marathon PB in the space of a week – I had to be proud really!

November
Robin Hood Trail 10k - 45:29
An autumnal trail run which was simply a running pleasure. Set in Sherwood Pines, the race had somewhat of a parkrun feel about it – relaxed, friendly and welcoming. I had no real race strategy, I just wanted to enjoy the run, especially as this would be the final race of 2017 I would be taking part in with my friend. The two loop course was set on well-trodden woodland paths and proved to be a glorious place to be running; it did not really seem like a race at all at times. I just ran to feel rather than focusing on times or splits, challenging myself suitably on the course. My relaxed approach saw me place third female overall and earn myself a little trophy. A lovely way to sign out the racing year with my ever present friend and running buddy.

Doncaster 10k - 44:02
A special run with a special person. It had been over two years since I had seen my best friend following her move to Australia, let alone been able to run with her. It seemed like fate that this event had fallen on the weekend she was back visiting, and in her hometown. Powering through the diverse streets of Doncaster with my friend felt almost surreal after so long apart. My friend - a natural speedster - was pushing me and I knew without looking at my watch we were running well. We wanted to try run the whole race together and we did, crossing the line side by side, ending in an emotional hug at the finish. I had set a new PB of 44:02, which was totally unexpected, but the memories and meaning of the race are what mattered to me most; I loved just having my best friend back.

parkrun 2017
I love parkrun, and this year there have been many memorable weekends spent at my home event in Lincoln. It is my happy place, often the thing that keeps me going through the week, and something which can never fail to make me smile. This year I have enjoyed visiting three new parkruns; Clumber parkrun on New Year’s Day where I surprised myself and finished as first female, Bury St Edmunds parkrun back in my childhood home of Suffolk, and the hilly madness that is Tring parkrun. I achieved my own personal goal of finishing as first female at Lincoln parkrun (twice!) and also had the best Saturday celebrating my 50th parkrun milestone at Lincoln, which I carefully planned to coincide with my friend’s 50th run. I am especially proud of the parkrun inspired cakes we made for the day – it probably took us as long as it has taken us to complete all 50 of our parkruns to bake and decorate the cakes – but it was worth it! Running wise, I have consistently seemed to run within the 21 minute time region this year, usually sub 21:30, and even managed to get under 21 minutes to set a new PB of 20:55 – finish times which never fail to shock me really. Time is not everything though, especially at parkrun, and I simply cannot imagine my life without parkrun now.

So that’s my 2017 in running terms – quite a year! Thank you to those who have contributed to these memories, they all mean a lot to me. Thank you also to everyone for the support that has been given to me, whether that's cheering me on, encouraging me, running with me, listening to me talk about running, reading about my running adventures, helping me get through life that is not running - or those special people who have done all of these things and more; I literally could not have done any of this without you.

The Week Of Mixed Running

12/24/2017

As the title suggests - its been a mixed week. Running has not felt great some days, and other days I have felt ok. The end of the year is nearing, so I put it down to just needed a bit of a break - which I have vowed to do after Christmas Day and the end of the Run Up To Christmas challenge. It will only be for a few days before my marathon training starts in January, but I feel it will help.

MONDAY: a fast five miles on the treadmill before Body Pump. I chose the treadmill as ice had returned to paths, and in the evening darkness I did not want to risk running outside. I pushed the speed a little, making the run a bit of a progression run, which helped the time pass quicker and make it feel less monotonous.

TUESDAY: in contrast to yesterday, today's run was a slow struggle for five miles. I didn't feel right before leaving the house, a bit queasy for some reason, so my expectations were not too high. I did not quite anticipate it feeling so uneasy though. I trudged around; I had planned on running six miles, but felt there was no point in pushing it when nothing seemed good at all!

WEDNESDAY: 7 slightly better miles. To begin with I felt a little anxious as I ran, my breathing unnatural; I think I was worried I was going to feel like I did yesterday. It took a few miles for me to feel more 'normal', but I managed 7 miles before my Body Pump class.

THURSDAY: back to a struggle today; I felt tired and low on energy, but squeezed in a short 4 miles early morning before work and a Christmas party in the evening. The only satisfaction I got was that I had fitted a run in early, and with a rest day planned tomorrow, I would have nearly 48 hours of recovery.

FRIDAY: Rest Day

SATURDAY: a festive Lincoln parkrun. After a week of running not feeling great, I was looking forward to some light relief. The final parkrun before Christmas always makes me feel festive; its great to be surrounded by so many happy people, the vast majority in some form of fancy dress.

I had donned a Santa hat (see image) and my aim was to try and complete the three laps of Boultham Park with it remaining in place! I ran much better than I anticipated, and at one point thoughts flashed into my head about whether I may be able to push to get close to low 21 minutes. I could not quite maintain it though, finishing in 21:21; however my hat did remain on throughout! A lovely morning of Christmas cheer, and I made sure to wish all the volunteer marshals on course a 'Merry Christmas' as I passed by on my final loop.

SUNDAY: a Christmas Eve 12 miler back in my childhood hometown of Stowmarket. I ran with my sister (see image), and as seems the case each year, trying to plan a long run route just seems to emphasise how small Stowmarket is! We plotted an out and back route to a nearby town, which whilst I tend to avoid running out and back, I really enjoyed. It was nice to chat and a great opportunity for us to catch up across the miles. The run also saw us both exceed our Run Up To Christmas targets with one day to spare!

I wish everyone who reads and follows my running adventures a very Merry Christmas - I hope you have a lovely festive period.

The Week of Icy Elements

12/16/2017

As Christmas rapidly approaches we have been treated to some suitably seasonal frosty weather at times this week. This has meant some adaptions to my usual running habits. I have also been continuing to log miles towards my Run Up To Christmas challenge, which has helped me get a few extra miles in, especially when the weather may have otherwise put me off!

MONDAY: it was so cold today I literally could not face putting myself through the numbing weather outside for the sake of running a few short miles before my Body Pump class. I wimped out, and ran a quick half mile to the gym and then hopped on the treadmill to get 3.5 miles in before the class!

TUESDAY: I was due to be working late into the evening today, so set my alarm for an early run before work. As I drew my curtains though I was met by glistening, icy paths - not ideal for running at all. I was close to crawling back into bed, but dug out some motivation (definitely helped by Run Up To Christmas!) and carefully walked to the gym for some more treadmill miles. I managed 5 faster miles; I had to up the pace a little as mentally it gets me off the machine quicker! The treadmill was just about bearable and I was consoled by it being a much safer option to running outside.

WEDNESDAY: today was marginally warmer which meant the ice melted and joyfully I could return to running outside! I loved the run for that simple reason, and got 6 miles in at just over 8 min/mile pace before my Body Pump class.

THURSDAY: another ice free day and another run I found really joyful. It was still cold and rain threatened to set in, but I ran around my familiar Lincoln streets almost thoughtlessly and 7 miles ticked by very comfortably at a steady 8.11 min/mile average pace.
Picture
FRIDAY: Rest Day

SATURDAY: the return of the ice. It was very frosty today and as I entered Boultham Park ready for Lincoln parkrun I could see the paths were a bright white colour in a number of places. Needless to say it was slippy underfoot at times and a few spots on the corners of the course did require you to resort to almost walking pace to safely navigate. The volunteers had the course well marshalled though and we were suitability warned of all hazards, so I did not feel unsafe at all. It was also great to see other runners looking out for each other, warning of patches ahead which may be hard to see were actually icy - the parkrun community at its best! I ran sensibly (see image), pushing when I could and being safe when I needed to, and finished in 21:16, which I was really happy with in the elements.

SUNDAY: more ice - the conditions actually annoyed me today. I set myself a goal of running 11.5 miles, which would see me hit 95 miles for my Run Up To Christmas challenge, and used that sole focus to keep me going. I started off well, but my enthusiasm faded as I got tired of dodging ice patches and trying to assess pavement surfaces. It was a bit bleak and miserable to be honest! I am praying for less festive conditions next week, and I do not care if that makes me a scrooge!

The 'Run Up To Christmas' Week

12/10/2017

Running has been the highlight of my week this week; after the joys of having my best friend visiting from Australia for the first time in two years, it has felt a bit empty not having her around again. This is one of the many reasons why I love running though, it is my constant, my 'go to' when I need something to focus on. With this in mind, I was therefore pleased to also have the purpose of the Run Up To Christmas challenge for this full week. Whilst I know my motivation to run is usually very strong, feeling part of this just helped me that little bit more.

MONDAY: to keep log some extra miles I opted for a short run to the gym for Body Pump, and then an even shorter half mile back to my house after - a simple way to log 3 more miles!

TUESDAY: today was one of those days where before leaving the house I did not hold too much expectation for my run, but then as soon as I started running it all just fell into place. Maybe less pressure leads to better results sometimes? I logged 6.3 miles (the odd 0.3 used to even off my current Run Up To Christmas total!) at an average pace of 7.58 min/mile. It always pleases me when I run sub 8 min/mile pace without consciously planning it - it is just a personal goal and something I am striving to be more naturally consistent at as my running progresses.

WEDNESDAY: another double run with a Body Pump class sandwiched in the middle. I say double run - the first 5.7 miles was a good paced, planned run; the second was 0.5 miles solely for the purpose of running home - but it all counts! The Body Pump class was actually replaced this week by a Cross Fit style substitute. I really enjoy the challenge when this happens as Cross Fit uses a mix of heavier weights and lower reps, which I am less used to, and thus it really pushes me - before subsequently leaving me feeling absolutely battered for days after!

THURSDAY: today was a bit of a struggle, as predicted my body was very sore from Cross Fit, but I also realised that with taking on the Run Up To Christmas challenge, and having an out of routine week last week, I had logged about nine days of consecutive running and consequently lots of accumulative miles. With this in mind I just kept my run short and easy; 4.3 miles at a comfortable 8.30 min/mile pace.

FRIDAY: Rest Day
Picture
SATURDAY: it was so cold today - I thought it had been cold up to now on some of my runs, but today was next level cold! I ran the 2.5 miles down to Lincoln parkrun and braced myself for a further biting 3.1 miles. Stood on the start line in my little shorts and long sleeved top I kind of just wanted to get it over with - in the nicest possible way of course! Running was hard, it was kind of mind numbingly cold, so much so that I am not sure I was even conscious of what I was doing for most of the run; just snaking around Boultham Park in almost autopilot mode. I definitely never looked at my watch, and when I finished only then did I glance down, trying to get my fingers to function. 21:30 was my time - not my quickest but I had absolutely no complaints at all today! I then braved a meandering run home, where I kept forgetting to actually restart my watch, but officially logged 2.5 further miles.

SUNDAY: after surviving yesterday's cold, today's challenge was snow. Snow had been forecast, and as I woke I peered nervously out my curtain and was happy to see no white covering had fallen yet; I knew I needed to get out as quickly as possible before the conditions turned. I made it about 1 mile into my run when flakes started to drift from the sky. The flakes quickly built and soon were driving harshly into my face. 'You are mad' a little old lady commented to me (although she was also walking in this snow I must add?!) - and it did feel a little brutal at times I admit (see image). As I progressed further into my run the snow began to settle and build around me. Around 5 miles in I was now running on a  white carpet, having to really focus on where I should place my feet. I had started quite steadily at around 8.15-8.20 min/mile pace, but I was slowing now as the paths became slippery, and my mindset shifted to simply getting around safely. Some paths were becoming crunchy with compact snow, others were glassy, whilst some remained joyously clear - it was a varied run to say the least and the mental endurance required actually probably tested me more than the physical 10 miles I ran! It was a challenge, but one I was determined to complete, and I am quite happy for that to be my only snow test for a while!

The Week of Abnormality

12/3/2017

This week has been anything but normal for me - a self confessed somewhat quite routined person. The cause of such change has not been a negative though by any means, and has been due to my best friend visiting from Australia. After two years apart, last week we ran together at the Doncaster 10k, and this week she has spent most of the time with me in Lincoln with more running, but also lots of food and drink involved! However despite being out of my usual lifestyle habits, I have actually still logged 36 miles of running this week, whilst still partying a little too hard - balance!

MONDAY: Body Pump class

TUESDAY: Rest Day - an early rest day with my friend arriving in Lincoln and also with a bit of forward thinking regarding my plans for the remainder of the week.

WEDNESDAY: it was bitterly cold today - a bit of a shock for my friend who is used to a slightly warmer climate these days! We wanted to attend Body Pump at the gym in the evening as it is something we used to do all the time, and my friend also wanted to reunite with our other friend (my long suffering marathon machine run buddy!) to reform our gym/running trio - Team One More Green (long story!) With all this in mind, we opted for a 5 mile treadmill run before Body Pump. I cannot even remember the last time I ran on a treadmill as I usually hate it! But having my friend next to me to chat to, and to keep me from slamming the big red 'stop' button it actually made me find it quite pleasant. Body Pump after was then such fun having the team back together again (see image) - I smiled throughout!

THURSDAY: my friend wanted to explore one of our old running routes today and had requested we fit in a 10 mile run - I obviously was not going to complain about this! What my friend probably had not predicted however was that the icy temperatures would continue... It was a freezing morning and I had to laugh as my friend tried to run with her arms folded to begin with in an attempt to keep warm! She adapted though and also stuck to my pace suggestion of 8:30 min/mile - rather than her usual speediness! Despite the cold - which even I was taken aback by at times, it was a beautiful run (see image) with even a few elegant snow flurries gracing us.

FRIDAY: today was December 1st and the start of the Run Up To Christmas Challenge I had signed up to. I am not a big fan of virtual runs usually, but I wanted to support Mind charity and I liked the flexibility of this one, e.g. no pressure to run every day! I kick started the challenge with 5 miles; however December 1st is also my friend's birthday and Thursday night we ended up drinking one too many celebratory gin cocktails; so I was not feeling on top form as I laced up my trainers! I surprised myself though with a good run at 8.19 min/mile average pace.

SATURDAY: due to an event held in the park, there was no Lincoln parkrun today. I therefore took the opportunity to rise early and get another 10 miles in, before heading to a 'Team One More Green' brunch with my friends which included and the best post run cake I may have ever eaten!

SUNDAY: more gin fuelled miles today after another birthday night out with my friend. This celebration had been planned so I knew to expect Sunday running to be a bit of a struggle! It was certainly harder than Friday's efforts, which may be correlated to the level of gin consumed, but I logged a 10k run, at not a bad pace considering I felt questionable!

So this week has been very varied for me - but I have still enjoyed my running (helped by having a best friend who loves running too!) as well as spending some quality time with my friend and letting my hair down a little bit (well maybe a lot!) I have loved having my friend with me this week and have such treasured memories from every day, but it has also reminded me that I can be a little less routined when I want to be!
