Last week saw me face my toughest challenge, and probably one the hardest thing I have ever done. I had to say goodbye to my best friend who is moving to live in Australia. There have been some pretty hard times in my life in the past, but I can honestly say I wouldn't want to relieve the pain and sadness that having to say goodbye to her made me feel. Our lives have been entwined in so many ways, not only have we been friends but also housemates, colleagues, training partners and, of course, running buddies. Within the last year or so it has actually been running that has really taken our friendship to a new level. There is a quote I remember reading which says 'running together makes friendships stronger and stronger'; and that has certainly seemed to be the case for us. The support we have given each other through training, the experiences we have shared on race days, and the rewards of watching each other set and achieve goals have contributed to making us even better friends. Together with our other friend we have also formed our own little running team: 'Team One More Green' (see green headbands in images!). We generated this name in order to enter the X Runner obstacle race this year, and it refers to our aim of always trying to put just one more green weight on the bar in Body Pump classes. Ever since X Runner this team name has somehow stuck! In every walk of life the most successful teams are formed of people who share similar goals; are supportive, caring and understanding of one another; and also know how to have fun and enjoy each other's company. These are very much the foundations on which Team One More Green have been built, and its made us into both a strong friendship and running unit. Despite the overwhelming sadness of my friend leaving, even writing this post I have been smiling as I recall all the wonderful moments we have shared; and I know we will go on to create many more memories both together and as a team. My friend has helped make me a better runner, but most importantly since I have known her she has helped make me a more self confident, self assured and happier person. |
